Celebrating our Fabulous 50 Nurses
TMC proudly recognizes five of its own among Tucson’s Fab 50 nurses – and the Most Inspirational Mentor of the Year, all designated by the Tucson Nurses Week Foundation.
The week of May 1 – 5, in honor of Nurses Week, we will be featuring one of our five Fabulous 50 Nurses each day.
The Tucson Nurses Week Foundation celebrates each year with city-wide activities honoring the community’s dedicated nursing professionals. The event kicks off with the annual Showcase of Tucson Nurses education conference and Healthy Fair on Friday, May 5. Then on Saturday evening, May 6, the community gathers for the Fab 50 Nurses Gala. All events will be held this year at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, 7000 N. Resort Dr.
A strong focus on building trust, providing care
Blessed with strong role models like his mother, who is a nurse, Joey Rodriguez embarked on a journey to a second degree in nursing 13 years ago and hasn’t looked back.
“When you first start out as a nurse, your first priority is completing the tasks and then you can focus on the caring piece,” he reflected. “With experience, the task part becomes second-nature and you are able to share yourself with the patient and their family. That’s how we build trust.”
Now a nurse manager on the post critical care unit, he was surprised at the level of acuity of the patients on the unit. Confident in his team and their abilities, he is reminded of a lesson he learned in college: “Nursing school taught me that when a challenge is great, if we all carry some of the load, together we can do great things.”
A devoted family man, nursing has brought many blessings for Rodriguez, the most important being meeting his wife and ultimately having three wonderful children.
